South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Review:

Just How Do They Get Away With It?

Where does one go to see a third grader-run pro Canadian organization called Viva La Resistance? How about a special nonbusiness-related partnership between Saddam Hussein and Satan? Where can one go in search for the mysterious all-knowing Clitoris? South Park, Colorado of course! That's right, after only it's third season running, the popular Comedy Central TV show is already on the big screen in South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Before watching this movie one would expect to simply see a long South Park episode with plenty of cursing. But South Park: BLU is the most creatively outrageous film since A Clockwork Orange. After seeing this movie, the only question one can ask is "How do they get away with it?"

The South Park movie starts out with a cheery musical number sung by Stan about his "quiet little redneck mountain town." The kids of South Park, using any means necessary, flock to the movie theatres to see "Asses of Fire," an R-rated movie starring their favorite Canadian actors, Terrance and Phillip. The film adds a hundred new four-letter words to the vocabularies of every child in South Park, and the parents are out to "Blame Canada" for the mental scarring of their children. In a nutshell, the outcry of the parents leads to World War III. Meanwhile down in hell, Satan and Saddam watch the events unfold in bed on CNN, planning their domination of the world.

This movie literally contains everything one would expect to see in a South Park movie, and quite a bit more. Of the expected, fans get to see the return of Big Gay Al (actually, more of him than just his return), Cartman's mother on the internet, and Kenny dies not once, but twice! The movie really lacks only two things, an oversexed song from Chef and a full-length musical score composed by Primus. Also the language and visuals in the film were just short of offensive for me (I am Jewish, but I have already been desensitized to the anti-Semitic remarks of Eric Cartman), and for many, the content may go way beyond offensive. Regardless of this, the film is still just incredibly clever and funny. Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker throw everything they possibly can into this film, creating their greatest satire of media influence yet. The film is bound to get horribly trashed by conservative critics, but it always seems that these men are most comfortable when surrounded in a bed of controversy.

Even with its R rating, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut stretches the limits of censorship to new reaches. The movie features over 170 curse words, as well as numerous low blows at issues such as military racism, homosexuality, and even the existence of God. Where can you go to see Sadam Hussein's penis? South Park.
(Well, not really... sort of... You really have to see it for yourself.)
